A Network for Student Photographers

Please post your Photoshop tutorial ideas here by tuesday morning. You should write a paragraph explaining what you will need to do to take your photograph and which tutorial you will use to enhance it:

Questions you should answer in your paragraph:

1. How will you set up your shot?
2. What camera settings will you need for your shot and why?
3. How does your shot work with your tutorial idea?

In addition to posting your own ideas, do comment on other's ideas as well.

Don't forget to provide a link to your tutorial!

The Pro way to do this is to write the name of the tutorial, and then hyperlink it using the little button that looks like a chain on the top of the window in which you type your response.

My draft plan is to incorporate a close up of a winter hat along with an Ice Text created from scratch in Photoshop. First I will take some shots of a winter hat on a flat surface, like the floor or a table. Because I want to have a clean fading effect around the hat when I put it together. I will need the camera settings to be on Program so I can adjust things like ISO. I chose the Ice Text Effect because it gave me a Christmasy~ feeling. so I think It'd work pretty well with a winter hat on the side.

Interesting idea, Veronica.
Some suggestions and questions:
1)"Program" is simply the automatic setting. I'd like you to think of a way you could use aperture or shutter speed in an interesting way to work with your composition.

2) How will the text appear in the photo with the hat, and what will it say? Think about ways to integrate the ice words you create into the photo.

I can use Apprture and make the "floor"/surface more blurry so the focus will be more on the hat instead of the other details around it. It's sort of like a banner shaped~photo. rectangular, horizontal. The hat is on the left side, and it'll be kind of bright like a spot light on stage with everything around being black. The Ice Text will say something like.... "X'MAS"?? something winter~yy... festive.. something christmas~yy?

Great! If you're thinking about working carefully with a depth of field, think about how the placement of the words work with that. Do they recede and get blurry? Are they clear and other things blurry? Etc...

I plan to have this flexed arm in the middle with the words SHAKE tattooed on it. The background will be something you see out of a bourne ultimanium film being blurry. My original photo would be pretty bland considering it'll be in broad daylight with just an arm in it. However I'll juice it with a blurry background effect, tattoo effect and maybe a flame effect. The camera settings will be set on TV since I will need the arm to be as detailed as possible. I'm just thinking it would be pretty cool if a guy (or girl *creepy*) flexed and the whole world shook.

Hmmm.... like it..."shake" meaning other people shake in fear? Perhaps we can show that visually in the background as well (blurry, as you say?)

Hi Mr. Gran,

The tutorial I want to use gives an explosion effect to the image (28 steps).

Instead of the man in the tutorial, I will be taking a photo of my friend. I'll need to take the photo from a bit far away so I'll be taking it outdoors. My ISO will most likely be at 400 or 800 because of the weather in Shanghai recently, but if there's enough sunlight, my ISO will be at 200 or 400. I will be using a fast shutter speed and a high depth of field.

To blend in with the background in the tutorial (the road and the floating truck), I will ask my friend to spread her arms out and imagine herself having control over the objects around her. (I'll be showing her the tutorial before I take photos of her).

Will it be okay if I used the same background (the road and the truck) as the one in the tutorial? (and my friend being in the same position as the man).

Tch, too easy! And how cool would it be to have a picture of your friend flipping one of the school buildings over? ...or some upper class-men? ;)

Seriously though, if you used a picture of shanghai, it would be more about the world that you live in, and more personal!

What if for the background, instead of the road, I use this tutorial? So it would be my friend with the explosion in the middle of a city. And I'll try to somehow blend the two so that the explosion will match up with the sunset.

hmmm... perhaps... why not use a real photograph though? There are some pretty scenic shots right here in shanghai!

Right now, I’m thinking of putting graffiti effects on the pictures of walls around school, for example the library windows facing the field. I think my shot will be a long shot, which includes the top of the building, showing a bit of the sky. The Graffiti effect will circle around the walls, but right now I don’t have any ideas what kind of graffiti designs I should put. My camera settings will be TV, since lighting is pretty important, the ISO would probably be set around 300, since it is going to be shot at a day time.

"My camera settings will be TV, since lighting is pretty important"
Lighting is always important WW!

The setting isn't TV, its Time Priority- meaning I'd like to know what sort of shutter speed you'll use? Slow to get a blur or motion (or a light painting), or fast to capture a split second?

There is no ISO 300. Maybe we need another quiz.... :P

Also, this tutorial is a little short.
