For my independent project I want to combine the works of the renowned skate-photographer Mike Blabac, and the pieces found at the flickr group silhouette photography.
Blabac has been a skateboard photographer for over 20 years and has some amazing work to check out. He also has done quite a bit of photography, exhibiting the good times they all have. While browsing some of his photos, I found that they all seem so appealing to the eye. This is because he keeps the composition simple, with nothing other than the skater and the context in the frame. His use of depth and field is also quite astonishing. All his work is displayed in various skate magazines around the world, but some can be found at http://www.curiculummag.com/ISSUE2/blabac.htm where he is also interviewed.
I found that most artists don’t just focus on one area of photography. They usually have a variety of work. Thus, I figured very few artists focused on silhouettes because silhouettes are very hard to capture, as they only appear when the sun is low. Silhouettes are so weird. Some how, the laws of physics make objects against the light appear really dark.
Despite my inability to understand how silhouettes work, I will try and create a piece with skateboarding, silhouettes, and the amazing composition that Blabac never fails to present.
